About Leaderville UWA

 

 

What is LEADERVILLE UWA Leadership Training Camp?

LEADERVILLE UWA is a five-day, four-night leadership workshop for high school leaders and adult advisors. Student leaders who attend this workshop will be given an opportunity to participate in a variety of leadership development activities that are conducted in both small and large groups.

For Student Leaders

Sessions will be devoted to specific areas including:

  1. Goals, aims and objectives of student government

  2. Self awareness and group dynamics

  3. Parliamentary procedure

  4. Problem solving and decision making

  5. Planning, organization, and time management

  6. Goal setting

  7. Communication

  8. Evaluation

For Adult Advisors**

Sessions will be devoted to specific areas including:

  1. Organizing your organization

  2. Leadership Development

  3. School Law

  4. Fund raising

  5. Conference Planning

** Three (3) CEUs are being offered by the University of West Alabama upon completion of the camp at an additional $100.00.  In addition, student leaders and adult advisors will have the opportunity to share ideas and projects, demonstrate both their own unique abilities, and make friends and contacts.

Who is on the instructional staff?

The staff consists of professional educators and students who have leadership and leadership workshop experience.

The adult staff consists of teachers and consultants who have been or who are currently student activities advisors in high schools. These adult staff members have served on the staff of numerous leadership workshops and have many years experience in student leadership development.

The Junior Counselors are students who have graduated from high school and who have volunteered to be Junior Counselors. They will be selected on the basis of their recommendations by their student council advisor and their workshop experience.

Where is the workshop held?

The workshop will be held on the campus of The University of West Alabama in Livingston, Alabama. General sessions will be held in Wallace Auditorium, Brock YHall, and Wallace Student Union Building. Meals will be served in Young Cafeteria. Small group sessions will be held in various classrooms and meetings rooms around campus. Housing will be in Speith Hall.

When will the workshop be held?

The workshop will start on Monday, June 28, 2004 and end on Friday, July 2, 2004. Registration will start at 3:00 pm on Monday and the first general session will convene at 5:00 pm. The workshop will end at 11:00 am on Friday, July 2, 2004.

What kind of accommodations will the delegates have?

The Leaderville UWA staff will make all room assignments. Students will be housed two to a room and delegates from the same school will not be assigned as roommates. Therefore, delegates from the same school should not plan to share personal items. Delegates must provide their own towels, as well as a pillow and linens (including a light blanket) for a single bed.

How do delegates get to the workshop?

Delegates must make their own arrangements to reach the University of West Alabama or to the various public transportation depots in the area. If students drive themselves to the workshop, they will not be allowed to drive their vehicles from the time of their arrival until the workshop is over. A map to the UWA campus is enclosed. There will be signs on the UWA campus to direct delegates to the dormitory, where the registration will take place.

Are there other rules of conduct that will be enforced?

Yes. Most of them will be discussed at the workshop’s first general session however; a few should be mentioned here.  Any delegate who is found in possession of drugs or alcoholic beverages, or who leaves the UWA campus, or who is found in the room of a member of the opposite sex, will be sent home at his/her parent’s expense. In addition, his/her principal will be immediately notified.

What should a delegate bring?

  1. A pillow, towels and bed linen (light blanket included) for a single bed.

  2. A respectable swimsuit (each delegate will have access to the university pool at least once).

  3. A pencil or pen (these are needed at each session).

  4. A positive attitude and open mind.

  5. Extra money for film, snacks, etc. . .

Can a delegate bring a musical instrument, camera, or radio?

Yes. In fact, delegates are encouraged to bring a musical instrument if they play one.  There is a talent show scheduled. Radios and tape/cd players are permitted but may not be brought to any of the sessions.

What should not be brought to the workshop?

  1. Alcoholic beverages or drugs.

  2. Valuable jewelry.

  3. A bad attitude.

Will there be some recreational time allowed?

Yes, and delegates will want to bring some recreational clothing including a bathing suit.

Do delegates need to bring a coat and tie or nice dress for a special event?

There will be no coat and tie event at Leaderville UWA, there will however, be a banquet on Thursday night to which we would prefer there be no shorts or t-shirts worn. It is highly recommended that shorts be worn to all other events. Please remind all delegates that the dress code will be enforced and delegates should pack accordingly.

Do delegates need parental permission forms?

Yes. Every delegate must submit signed copies of the parent permission and medical information forms that are included in the packet.

Do delegates have to have an advisor attend with them?

No. Advisors are encouraged to attend but not required. Those who do attend must register as a delegate just as the students.

Who may attend?

Students from any high school may attend. However, no seniors who graduated this year (03-04) may attend. Preference should be given to student government, class and club officers including DECA, JROTC, FBLA, NHS, Yearbook, Newspaper, Key Club, Debate officers, who will serve during the 2004-2005 school year. No more than 150 students will be accepted.

What about early departure/temporary dismissal?

This is discouraged. Roommates are assigned, meals are ordered, and sessions are planned on the basis of all registered delegates being in attendance for the entire workshop. School should only send delegates who commit to attend the entire workshop.

What is the registration fee, who are checks made payable to, and what is the registration deadline?

The registration cost is $250.00 per student delegate and $285.00 per adult delegate and all checks must be made payable "UWA Foundation – Leaderville UWA".

What about refunds?

No refunds will be made after May 17, 2004. However, substitute delegates may be sent as long as the substitute delegate is of the same sex as the delegate they are replacing. Substitute delegates must bring all necessary permission forms with them. There will be no charge for same sex substitutions.
